GREENVILLE, N.C. -- Julia Jacoby registered four hits and scored two runs as the Fairfield University softball team opened its 2006 season with a split on the first day of the East Carolina University Pirate Classic. The Stags lost the opener by a 3-2 count to the University of Delaware, but came back with a 3-2 extra-inning victory against Longwood College.
In the opener, Fairfield jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a first inning run, but fell behind when the Blue Hens posted a pair of runs in the fourth frame. The Stags tied the game with a run in the top of the fifth inning, before Delaware recaptured the lead with a single score in the bottom of the fifth.
Tara Hansen took the loss against Delaware, despite allowing six hits and striking out four batters. Molly Harris and Shannon Logan each contributed a hit to the Fairfield cause.
In the nightcap, Fairfield used a eight-hit attack to defeat Longwood by a 3-2 margin. Harris, Jacoby, Logan, and Kristen D'Alessandro each stroked two hits for the Stags. Fairfield scored the game-winning run in the eighth inning off Hansen's RBI fielder's choice to second base. Tracy Sylvestre earned the win in her first start of the season.
Fairfield continues play in the tournament by playing St. Francis, Pa. and host East Carolina on Saturday afternoon.
