FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Sarah Minice tossed a five-hit shutout in the opening game of a softball doubleheader against Saint Peter's College, helping the Stags post a split with the Peahens. The Stags dropped the nightcap by a 5-1 count, as Minice took the loss after tossing six-plus innings.
Fairfield registered 13 hits in the opener as five Stags had at least two hits in the contest. The Stags jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Allie Wigand singled and took second on a wild pitch. Kristina Lingo stroked a base hit that sent Wigand to third base. A mishandled grounder allowed Wigand to score the game's first run.
The Stags scored two more runs in the third, fourth, and sixth innings. Kayla Marth singled home a run in the third inning, while Meghan Borst added an RBI single in the fourth frame. The Stags final two innings came in the sixth inning as Marth tripled home a run and later scored off Wigand's sacrifice fly.
Saint Peter's came back strong in the second game by scoring two runs in the top of the first inning following a two-run double by Jackie Cross. Fairfield cut the lead to 2-1 when Wigand recorded an RBI single. The Peahens picked up that run in the sixth inning off Jillian Magee's base hit. The team tallied the final two runs of the game off Megan Papierniak's two-run homer.
