LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – Sophomore pitcher Sarah Minice earned a win in both ends of a doubleheader as the Fairfield University softball team swept Rider University this afternoon. Minice surrendered six hits and fanned six batters in her 14 innings of work, which improved her overall record to 8-7.

The pitchers dominated the first game as neither team could gain any advantage in the first six innings. It wasn’t until the sixth inning before a team could break through for a run. Dani Griswold started the winning rally with a single, and quickly took second with a stolen base. She scored the winning run when Jessica Stand sent a double off the left-center field wall to make the score 1-0.

In the second game, the Stags started the game quickly as Dani Griswold drilled a solo home run with one out in the top of the first inning. Fairfield tacked on two runs in the third when Kristie Trifiolis started the rally with a one-out double down the right-field line. Griswold followed with a walk, putting runners on first and second.

Kristina Lingo drove a ball through the right side of the infield to send home Trifiolis. Lingo drew a throw going to second base which allowed Griswold to run home with the team’s third run. Minice retired the first eight batters she faced before yielding a single to left field by Lauren Brunner.

The Broncs broke through against Minice in the fourth frame, her 11th inning of work. Amanda Centino reached first on an error, while Harris and Eckett followed with a walk and a hit batter to load the bases with no one out. Derrin Minunni followed with a hard grounder to the left side which Trifiolis knocked down. Centeno scored on the play, while Harris was thrown out by a strong relay play from second baseman Jessica Stand. Minice retired the next two hitters on a fly ball to right field and a ground out to shortstop.

The Stags added a run in the fifth frame after Lingo led off with a walk and came all the way around the bases off Borst’s double to left-center field, making the score 4-1. The Stags scored their final two runs off a botched double steal that resulted in two runners crossing home plate.
