Softball Gains First Sweep Of 2009 Season With Wins Over Valparaiso & Detroit Mercy
Mar 5, 2009
ORLANDO, Fla. -- Kayla Marth recorded three hits and three RBI which helped the Stags softball team earn its first sweep of the season, defeating Valparaiso (4-3) and Detroit Mercy (9-7) at the Rebel Games.
Fairfield started the day with Valparaiso and fell behind after a two-run second inning by the Crusaders. The Stags fought their way back into the game by scoring three times in the top of the fifth inning. Allison Wigand came home with Fairfield's first run after Dani Griswold drove a single to left to make the score 2-1. Griswold and Kristie Trifiolis, who walked in the inning, were chased home by Marth's double to right field for a 3-2 Stags lead.
Valparaiso tied the game in the bottom of the inning when Jill Jacobsen lofted a sacrifice fly to center which sent home Sara Strickland with the team's third run. The international tie breaker was used in the eighth inning, placing Laura Carta on second base to start the inning. Wigand's sacrifice bunt was mishandled which allowed Carta to advance to third and Wigand to reach first base. After Wigand stole second, both runners advanced a base following a passed ball to put Fairfield in front 4-3. Pitcher Sara Minice made the run hold up by retiring three straight batters to earn the victory.
Against Detroit Mercy, the Stags scored at least one run in the each of the first five innings, including a four-run first that erased a three-run lead that Detroit Mercy built in its half of the inning. Fairfield took advantage of three straight errors to start its half of the first, loading the bases with no outs. Meghan Borst followed with a two-run double, and Marth added a run-scoring single to tie the game at 3-3. Fairfield took the lead for good when Allie Ritacco's ground out sent Borst home with the fourth run.
The Stags scored a single run in the second, third, and fourth innings behind a sacrifice fly from Lingo, an RBI single from Jessica Stand, and a run-scoring single from Ritacco. After Detroit Mercy added a pair of runs in the top of the fifth, the Stags erased that progress with two runs in the bottom of the frame after Lingo laced a two-run double to center field. Detroit Mercy tallied two runs in the top of the seventh, but Borst finished out the game with a strikeout.
Fairfield finishes its week in Orlando by taking on Valparaiso and Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne on Friday afternoon.
