PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Kayla Marth, Kristie Trifiolis, and Lisa Meringer each registered two hits in a doubleheader against Providence, but the Stags dropped both games by 2-1 and 5-4 scores.
The Stags fell behind in the first game when the Friars posted a run in the bottom of the first inning. Mary Rose Sheehy drove a two-out home run to put the team in front. Fairfield came back to tie the game in the fourth frame when Trifiolis led off with an infield single. She went to second following a sacrifice bunt, advanced to third following Kristina Lingo's infield single, and scored after Meghan Borst sliced a base hit.
The Friars took the lead for good when Christy Becker reached first with a misplayed grounder. She took second base after a wild pitch and crossed the plate after Gina Rossi drove a base hit to the outfield. Sarah Minice took the loss despite allowing just three hits and fanning six hitters.
In the nightcap, the visitors held a 2-1 lead after three-plus innings, courtesy of Borst's home run and an RBI single by Marth. Providence answered with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, before Fairfield fought its way back into the game with a run in the fifth and sixth innings.
Trifiolis was responsible for the run in the fifth inning thanks to Trifiolis' run-scoring single. Jessica Stand contributed an RBI double in the sixth inning which made the score 5-4, but the Stags went in order in the seventh frame to end the contest.
Fairfield returns to action on Thursday when it hosts Central Connecticut State University at Alumni Softball Diamond.
