FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Meghan Borst hit a solo home run over the center field fence in the bottom of the sixth to lift the Stags softball team to a 3-2 win over Niagara in the nightcap, gaining a split in the doubleheader.
Borst tossed the first five innings of the game but did not receive a decision. Sophomore Sarah Minice pitched the final two innings to earn her 15th win of the season. The Stags jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, a rally which started with a lead-off double by Kristie Trifiolis. She advanced to third base on a passed ball, and came home when Borst doubled. Borst went to third base on Kayla Marth's single, placing runners on first and third. Marth took off for second base but was gunned down, which allowed Borst to run home for the team's second run.
The Purple Eagles made the score 2-1 in the top of the second when Kayla Hines led off with a double and came home on Jenna Baker's two-out single. Niagara eventually tied the game in the top of the sixth inning. Teresa Healy started the inning with a double, and took third base on a ground out. Heather Lohrman drove a base hit to left field to send home Healy for a 2-2 tie. Borst led off the bottom of the inning with her team-leading fourth homer of the season, giving Fairfield the winning margin. Minice struck out the first two hitters before surrendering a base hit. Kristin Kill ended the game with a fielder's choice.
In the first game, the Purple Eagles reached Minice for four earned runs, building a 4-0 lead after six innings. Fairfield managed just one hit through the first five innings, a second inning single by Allie Ritacco. The Stags added a hit in the sixth inning when Trifiolis singled to left field. Fairfield's final hit came in the seventh when Marth started things off with a base hit.
Fairfield returns to action on Thursday when it travels to Sacred Heart University for a single game.
