Softball Splits Twinbill With Manhattan To Finish Conference Co-Champs With Jaspers

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University softball team won the opener, but dropped the nightcap in 10 innings as the Stags and Manhattan College split their doubleheader this afternoon. The split results in the two teams sharing the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular-season title.

Fairfield started the doubleheader with a pair of runs in the first inning of the first game. Kristie Trifiolis hit a double to left center, while Dani Griswold walked to place runners on first and second with no outs. Meghan Borst flew out to right field, allowing both runners to move up a base. Kayla Marth reached first base on a misplayed grounder, which allowed Trifiolis to score the first run. Griswold came home on a wild pitch to make the score 2-0.

The Stags added a run in the bottom of the second when Jessica Stand singled with two out, and came home on Trifiolis' double over the center fielder's head. The score went to 5-0 with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Griswold and Borst picked up a base hit and took second and third following a wild pitch. Griswold came home for the second time on a wild pitch to push the score to 4-0. Marth sent home Fairfield's final run with a sacrifice fly.

Manhattan broke the shutout with a run in the sixth inning on back-to-back doubles off starter Sarah Minice. The pitcher earned her 18th win by striking out eight hitters and scattering four hits.

In the second game, Fairfield took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning when Marth singled home Griswold, who reached first on a base hit. Manhattan tied the game in the top of the fifth inning. With runners on first and second, Kristina Walraven hit a grounder to the hole at second base. Jessica Stand flipped to Trifiolis, but the runner was safe. On the play, pinch runner Gianna Cirilli came home from second base.

The Jaspers won the game in the top of the tenth inning by putting together three hits, starting with a double by pitcher Melissa Donnelly. Fairfield went in order in the bottom of the tenth inning.

The two teams will share the MAAC title and advance to the MAAC tournament later this week in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. The tournament begins on Thursday, May 7.
