Softball Falls To Manhattan At MAAC Tournament In 16-Inning Marathon
May 8, 2009
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- The Fairfield University softball season came to an end in a 16-inning marathon against Manhattan College, as the Jaspers used a three-run inning to post a 6-3 decision and eliminate the Stags from the 2009 MAAC Tournament.
The Jaspers jumped out to a 2-0 lead by scoring a single run in both the first and second innings. Nicole Michel drove home the first run with a base hit in the top of the first. Amanda Genovese stroked a base hit to center field in the second, which was mishandled to allow Monica Evangilista to score the second run of the game.
Fairfield tied the score in the bottom of the third as Allie Ritacco led off with a double. She went to third base on a single by Kristie Trifiolis, putting runners on the corner. Both Ritacco and Trifiolis scored when Meghan Borst's grounder was misplayed and thrown past the first base.
Manhattan retook the lead in the top of the fourth courtesy of Kristina Walravern's single up the middle that made the score 3-2. Fairfield tied the game in the bottom of the inning when Kayla Marth hit her third home run of the year, a shot that landed over the center field wall.
Neither team would score for 11 innings until Manhattan broke the scoring drought with three runs in the top of the 16th inning. The Jaspers put together four hits and took advantage of one Fairfield error to score three unearned runs. The Stags tried to rally in the bottom of the inning by putting a couple of runners on base, but could not bring either runner home.
Both pitchers went the distance in this game. Fairfield starter Sarah Minice surrendered 22 hits and struck out nine hitters. Manhattan hurler Ashley Rampino scattered 10 hits, fanned nine, and allowed one earned run in her 16 innings of work.
