Apr 29, 2009

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- Kristie Trifiolis recorded three hits while Sarah Minice won her 17th game to help the Fairfield University softball team to a split with Iona College. The Stags won the first game by a 5-2 count, but dropped the second game 9-1.

The Stags jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, a rally which started with a Trifiolis single. She came around to score off Allie Wigand's infield single. Meghan Borst, who singled to left earlier, also scored on that play when the ball was thrown away on the attempt to retire Wigand. Iona cut the lead in half on a pair of walks and a base hit, making the score 2-1.

Fairfield put the game out of reach with three runs in the fourth inning, all of which came with two outs. The first two runs came home after a throwing error by the second baseman, allowing Jenna DiBernardo and Kristina Lingo to score. The team's final run of the game was sent home by Trifiolis' triple.

Minice earned the win by scattering six hits and striking out seven batters in seven innings. The Stags also stole four bases in the game, led by Trifiolis with two thefts.

In the second game, Iona registered 11 hits against starting pitcher Meghan Borst, who lasted four-plus innings before yielding to Minice. The Gaels scored a single run in the first and second innings before blowing the game open with five runs in the fifth frame. The Stags scored their only run in the top of the fifth inning as Trifiolis and Dani Griswold each singled to put runners on first and second. Kayla Marth drove home the run with a base hit which made the score 7-1.

The Stags return to action on Thursday, April 30 when they host Sacred Heart University for a single game at Alumni Softball Field.
