WEST HARTFORD, Conn. -- Kayla Marth posted five hits which included a double in the Stags softball team's two losses at the University of Hartford this afternoon. Fairfield fell in the first game by a 10-2 score before dropping the nightcap by a 4-2 count.
The Hawks scored a run in four innings in the first game as the eight-run rule was invoked after five innings. Hartford scored a run in the bottom of the first and added four more runs in the second frame against starter Daniellie Ionvino. The lead reached seven runs after four innings before the Stags rallied for a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning.
Jessica Stand sent home the first run of the game with a triple, chasing home Alli Wigand who led off the inning with a base hit. Stand tallied the team's second run when Kristie Trifiolis hit a ground ball which was mishandled by the Hawks' defense. Dani Griswold singled to place runners at first and second, but the rally ended with three straight fly balls. Hartford ended the game three runs in the bottom of the inning which gave the team the necessary eight-run margin.
In the second game, Hartford struck early once again with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning off starter Meghan Borst. The Stags cut the lead in half with a run in the second inning as Marth singled and went to second on a grounder to first base. Allie Ritacco brought her home with a base hit to make the score 2-1.
The lead increased to 4-1 before Fairfield was able to push another run across the plate. Kristie Trifiolis led off with a walk and advanced two bases on consecutive ground outs. Marth registered her third straight hit with a double that sent home Trifiolis. The Stags could not come any closer, giving the Hawks a 4-2 win.
Fairfield returns to action on Saturday, April 18 when it hosts Canisius College in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) doubleheader. First pitch is slated for noon.
