Softball Remains Unbeaten At Home With Sweep Of Canisius College

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Stags softball team improved to 6-0 at home with a pair of victories against Canisius College this afternoon. Pitcher Sarah Minice earned the victory in the 2-0 and 8-3 victories.

Minice tossed a six-hit shutout in the first game, striking out six and allowing just two walks in seven innings of work. The Golden Griffs had their best opportunity in the first inning when Rachelle Barrientos walked and stole second with one out. Michelle Fridey picked up a base hit to center field and Barrientos rounded third to come home. Dani Griswold tossed a one-hopper to home which froze Barrientos and forced her to scamper back to third. Minice struck out Lizzy Gatto to end the inning.

The Griffs would also put a runner on third base with two outs in the fourth and the sixth inning, but Minice picked up a strike out in each frame to quell the threat. The Stags added a run in the third inning when Meghan Borst laced a single down the left field line, and took second base following a wild pitch. She came home when Alli Wigand stroked an opposite-field single to make the score 1-0. The Stags added a run in the fourth when Jenna DiBernardo scored and came home off Kristie Trifiolis' double to left-center field.

Canisius mounted one more threat in the game, placing runners on second and third with two outs. Minice forced Barrientos into a pop-up to third base which ended the game.

In the nightcap, Fairfield took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, as Kayla Marth scored off a wild pitch by Juliette Bowers. Canisius took the lead with a single run in the third and fourth innings, making the score 2-1. The Stags tied the game in the bottom of the fourth when Marth came home following Kristina Lingo's base hit to right field.

Cameron Norton regained the lead for the Golden Griffs in the fifth inning, earning a one-out wwalk and scoring after Paige Freiberger doubled to center field. The Stags took control of the game in the bottom of the fifth, a rally which started with the first two runners reachinng base on errors. Borst brought home the first two runs with a single, while Marth followed with an RBI single to make the score 5-3. The final two runs were sent home courtesy of a fielder's choice from Allie Ritacco and Laura Carta.

Minice recorded the win by pitching the final five innings of the game in relief of starter Borst. Minice improved her record to 13-8.
