Apr 14, 2009
FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Meghan Borst went three for three with an RBI while Kristie Trifiolis had two hits and two RBI as the Stags softball team posted an 8-3 win over Stony Brook University. Sarah Minice went the distance in the pitching circle, fanning six hitters to earn her 12th win of the season.
Stony Brook jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Vicky Kavitsky led off with a walk, stole second and came home following Kelsi Fanelli's base hit. The Stags took the lead in the bottom of the inning, courtesy of five base on balls. Allie Rittaco and Jenna DiBernardo each forced home a run with a bases-loaded walk.
Fairfield added to its lead with two more runs in the second inning, beginning with Trifiolis' double down the left line which sent home Jessica Stand. Trifiolis scored the team's fourth run after Borst lined a single up the middle. The Stags scored in each of the first five innings which allowed the home team to hold an 8-3 lead after five innings.
The Seawolves' pitchers surrended 10 walks in the game, and eight of Fairfield's nine batters had at least one base on balls in the game. Three of Fairfield's eight runs came home off a bases-loaded walk. Minice scattered 10 hits and walked two in her seven innings of work.
The Stags return to action on Thursday when they travel to the University of Hartford on Thursday afternoon.
