Apr 23, 2009

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Four Fairfield University student athletes had a hit in the game, but the Stags could not put any of those hits together and dropped a 3-0 decision to Sacred Heart University on the road.

The Pioneers scored what proved to be the winning run in the bottom of the first inning when they put together a pair of singles, including an RBI base hit with one out. The home team pushed two more runs across in the bottom of the third to take a 3-0 lead, taking advantage of two Fairfield errors during the rally. Sacred Heart posted a pair of hits in the inning, giving the team four hits in through the first three frames.

Ali Wigand, Allie Ritacco, Laura Carta, and Jessica Stand each posted a base hit in the game. Meghan Borst pitched the first three innings for the Stags, surrendering two earned runs before yielding to Sarah Minice. Minice allowed just one hit and fanned two hitters over the final three innings.

Fairfield returns to action on Sunday when it hosts Saint Peter's College in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) doubleheader. The Stags currently are first in the MAAC with an 8-2 record.
