Softball Comeback Falls Short In 5-3 Decision Against Quinnipiac
Apr 8, 2009
HAMDEN, Conn. -- Jenna DiBernardo hit a two-run home run that pulled the Fairfield University softball team within two runs, but the Stags could come no closer in a 5-3 loss to Quinnipiac on the road.
The Bobcats jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning as starting pitcher Danielle Iovino walked two batters, hit two batters, and threw a wild pitch to contribute to the Quinnipiac rally. Joelle Jacobsen had the team's only hit in the first inning, lining a change up between shortstop and third base which made the score 3-0.
The home team added a pair of runs in the fourth inning without registering a base hit. A walk, a stolen base, and an error allowed the Bobcats to put runners on first and third. Meghan Borst came into the game for Iovino and yielded a run off a wild pitch that made the score 4-0. A sacrifice fly produced the fifth run for Quinnipiac, giving it a commanding 5-0 lead after four innings.
The Stags cut into the lead with a run in the fifth inning as Dani Griswold line a double to right-center field with Kristie Trifiolis in motion, which allowed the junior to score Fairfield's first run. In the bottom of the inning, the Bobcats nearly picked up another run when Mina Duffy hit a ball that appeared as though it would clear the center field fence. Kristina Lingo made a spectacular catch over the fence to keep the score a 5-1.
Fairfield cut the deficit in half when DiBernardo hit a two-run home run with two out, which also scored Alli Wigand who walked earlier in the inning. However, the next four Fairfield batters were retired to end the game.
The Stags return to action on Thursday when they travel to Siena College for a make-up doubleheader from last Saturday's rain out. The St. John's game, which was scheduled as a home game for Fairfield on Thursday, was postponed in order to make up the Siena doubleheader.
