Softball Ends Season By Dropping Two Games In MAAC Tournament

May 10, 2008

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University softball team dropped a pair of games in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) tournament which ended the Stags season with a 25-25-1 overall record. The team lost a winner's bracket game to Canisius College by a 6-1 score, and dropped another 6-1 decision to Marist College in the loser's bracket final.

In the first game, Fairfield jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Kristie Trifiolis led off the inning with a double off the left field wall. She took third base after Julia Jacoby's grounder was mishandled, putting runners on first and third. Jacoby took off for second base, and set up an opening for Trifiolis to finish up the double steal by sliding safely across home plate.

Canisius took the lead in the third inning when Katie Miranto stroked a double to left center field, sending home two runners for a 2-1 Griffs lead. The top-seeded team put the game out of reach with a three-run fifth inning, courtesy of an RBI single by Miranto and a two-run single by Melissa Fridey. Pitcher Juliette Bowers made the runs stand up for the Golden Griffs, earning her 19th win of the season.

Against Marist, the game went in the other direction as the Red Foxes scored the first six runs of the game, four of which were unearned. The Stags scored their only run of the game in the seventh inning when Erin Frank laced a double to left-center field to score Kristina Lingo.

Canisius and Marist will face each other in the championship round of the MAAC tournament on Sunday. Canisius needs just one win to win the conference title and advance to the NCAA tournament.
