FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Laura Puddle and Lauren Henderson each scored a pair of goals, as sixth-ranked University of Connecticut (17-1 overall) defeated Fairfield University (7-13 overall) in a non-conference field hockey game.
The Stags held their own against their nationally-ranked opponent until Laura Henderson found herself free in the middle of the circle. She unleashed a shot which caught the left corner of the net for a 1-0 Husky lead. Puddle pushed the lead to 2-0 with a goal which started on a penalty corner. After the first attempt failed, Henderson sent a pass to Puddle, who beat goaltender Laura Callahan to the short side.
Ten minutes into the second half, UConn increased its lead to 3-0 when Puddle tallied her final goal off a pass from Katie Cavanagh. Henderson and Kristin Galuski finished off the scoring with goals 18 minutes apart, both set up by Lauren Hennessey.
Callahan made a career-high 14 saves for Fairfield, while Melissa Bostwick had six saves to record the shutout.
The Stags return to action on October 29 when they play Sacred Heart University in the semi-finals of the Northeast Conference tournament at 1:30 pm. The tournament is being played at the home field of top-seeded Rider University.
