Fairfield, Conn: The Fairfield University field hockey team trailed 1-0 at half but exploded for four second half tallies to defeat Columbia University today in non-conference action on University Field. Senior Dani Brown led the charge, scoring two goals-including the game winner-and adding an assist. It was her second three point effort in as many days.
The two teams played a fairly evenly matched first-half, with each limiting the opponents scoring opportunities. With 8:48 remaining in the first half, Meghan Hughes put Columbia on the board with a goal off an assist by Maureen White. The Lions would finish the half with a one-goal lead.
At 21:03 of the second, Julie Knoblich evened the score when she found the back of the net off a pass by Kelly Rath. Brown would score the next two for the Stags off penalty corners. The first came at the 12:33 mark off an assist by Lauren Pizzi, while the second came at 7:31 off a rebound by the goalkeeper. Liz Croney made it 4-1 at 5:04 off a penalty corner when her shot deflected off a defender, then rang off the crossbar and fell into the goal.
The Stags out-shot the Lions 23-15 and took 14 penalty corners to their six. Lauren Thomas made eight saves in goal and collects the win, while Molly Starsia-Lasagna had nine stops and suffers the loss.
Fairfield is back in action this Wednesday when they travel to face Monmouth. Game time is set for 3:30 pm.
