
Field Hockey Falls In Season Opener To Fifth-Ranked UConn, 8-1

STORRS, Conn. -- Seven different University of Connecticut student-athletes scored a goal as the Fairfield University field hockey team opened the 2009 season with an 8-1 loss to the fifth-ranked Huskies on Sunday afternoon. Anne Nieuwenhuis scored the Stags lone goal with a minute remaining in the first half.
UConn struck in pairs during its seven-goal first half, opening the period with a goal at the four-minute mark. The Huskies pushed the lead to 2-0 when Melissa Gonzalez scored at the 8:02 mark. Just 33 second later, the score moved to 3-0 after Rayell Heistand tallied an unassisted score. Katie Semanoff made the score 4-0 with just under 15 minutes remaining in the half, before the fifth Husky goal came 12 seconds later.
The final UConn first-half goals came one minute apart, courtesy of Loren Sherer's unassisted goal and Jestine Angelini's unassisted score which improved the home team's advantage to 7-0. The Stags broke the run when Anne Nieuwenhuis found the back of the cage with one minute left in the first half.
The Huskies scored the only second-half goal off Ali Blankmeyer's shot with 20 minutes remaining in the game. UConn held a 37-8 advantage in shots. Fairfield goalkeeper Caitlin O'Donnell made 15 saves as the starter.
Fairfield returns to action on Friday, September 4 when it hosts Ball State at University Field. Game time is slated for 3 pm. The game is the first of six straight home games for the Stags.
