
Field Hockey Runs Out Of Time In 4-3 Setback Against Maine

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University field hockey team scored a goal with lestt than a minute remaining, but could not set up a game-tying opportunity as Maine posted a 4-3 victory this afternoon. The game was the final home appearance for the Class of 2010, and two the seniors figured in the Stags scoring.
The two teams battled to a scoreless tie in the first half, although Maine outshot Fairfield by an 11-1 count in the first 35 minutes. The second half started quickly as Maine pushed up field, but the Stags stopped the run and countered with its own attack. Fairfield was awarded a penalty stroke on its first offensive push of the half. Senior Carly McCullough converted the shot and put the Stags in front by a 1-0 score.
Three minutes later, Fairfield doubled its lead as Taylor Callahan worked her way open in the far corner and one-timed a shot past Maine goalkeeper Brittany Fleck with 30 minutes remaining. Maine came right back and scored four goals over the next 16 minutes to regain control of the game.
Courtney Veinotte tallied the first two Maine goals, the second coming off a penalty corner. Maine enjoyed a 17-2 edge in penalty corners for the game, but converted only on Lelia Sacre's goal with 16 minutes remaining.
Down 4-2, Fairfield tried to make a come back and nearly accomplished the task. With under a minute remaining, McCullough scored her second goal of the game when she converted a penalty corner which was started by Melanie Leo. Fairfield made one more push up field, but Maine's defense stopped the rush.
Fairfield goalkeeper Caitlin O'Donnell made 11 saves in the game, while Fleck finished with five stops for the visitors.
