Field Hockey Edged In Final Minute Of 1-0 Decision Against Holy Cross
Sep 26, 2009
WORCESTER, Mass. -- After 69 minutes of scoreless field hockey, the College of the Holy Cross finally broke through the defensive struggle and scored the game-winning goal for a 1-0 decision over Fairfield University.
Both teams played strongly on defensive in the first half as neither team managed to score a goal in the opening 35 minutes. The two teams combined for only eight shots as play was kept mainly to the middle third of the field.
The Stags pressed more on offensive in the second half which helped them acquire five penalty corners early in the half. Fairfield turned those opportunities into eight shots but the Holy Cross defense would not yield a goal.
It wasn't until there just over one minute remaining in regulation that the game was decided. Courtney Callahan tipped in a pass from Rachel Miers with 1:09 on the clock that beat the Fairfield goalkeeper to lift the Crusaders to their second win of the season. Callahan has the game-winning goal in each of Holy Cross' wins this season.
