Field Hockey Comes Up One Goal Short Against Hofstra
Sep 12, 2009
FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University field hockey team tried another miraculous comeback but was one goal short at the final whistle as Hofstra won a 3-2 decision against the Stags.
Hofstra scored the game's first goal just 85 seconds into the game when Genna Kover converted a pass from Krizia Layne. Seven minutes later, the visiting team improved their advantage to two goals after Kristin Thompson made her way down the left side of the circle and sent a pass to the stick of Kovar. She one-timed a shot that beat goalkeeper Caitlin O'Donnell to the short side, making the score 2-0.
Fairfield cut into the lead when the Stags were awarded their first penalty corner of the game. Melanie Leo sent the ball to Molly Byrnes, who stopped the ball for Carly McCullough. The senior released a shot that went over the goalkeepers stick and hit the back of the net for a 2-1 score.
Hofstra added one more goal before the half ended as Reyna Farnum controlled a rebound off a teammate's shot, and pushed the ball under the goalkeeper to make the score 3-1. The Pride enjoyed a 9-2 lead in shots during the first half.
The Stags made things close when Leo scored her second goal in as many days. She found a loose ball in the middle of the circle and hit a shot that caught the corner which cut the lead to 3-2. Fairfield could not come any closer despite a few penalty corner opportunties late in the game.
O'Donnell finished the game with eight saves, including seven in the second half. Hofstra goalkeeper Amanda Heyde tallied two stops, both coming in the second half.
Fairfield returns to action when it hosts Bryant University on September 16 at 3 pm.
