Sep 16, 2009
FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Caitlin O'Donnell made three saves to record her first career shutout as the Fairfield University field hockey team posted a 2-0 win over Bryant University this afternoon. The victory evened up the Stags overall record at 3-3.
Neither team managed a goal in the first half as both teams played superb defense. The two squads managed just seven shots combined with Fairfield holding a 4-3 edge at intermission. When the teams did manage a shot, both goalkeepers made the save. Kundayi Mawema tallied three saves for Bryant, while Caitlin O'Donnell registered one save in the opening 35 minutes.
Fairfield broke through just three minutes into the second half when Anne Nieuwenhuis brought the ball into the left side of the circle and sent a cross into the center circle. Marit Westenberg was waiting for the ball and released a shot that caught the far corner for a 1-0 Fairfield lead.
The Stags pushed the lead to 2-0 with 18 minutes remaining in regulation after Westenberg was pulled down on a breakaway. Carly McCullough took the penalty stroke and sent the ball into the left side of the goal for the team's second goal.
Fairfield outshot Bryant by an 8-4 count in the second half, and a 12-7 margin in the game. Mawema finished the contest with seven saves, while O'Donnell had three stops for the Stags.
The Stags return to action on Saturday, September 19 when they host Drexel University. It will be the final game of the team's six-game home stand, during which it owns a 3-2 record after today.
