Two Second-Half Goals Lift Field Hockey To 2-1 Win Over Brown
Sep 29, 2009
FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Melanie Leo set up two second-half goals for the Stags field hockey team, helping it post a 2-1 come-from-behind win against Brown University.
The Stags dominated the game on both ends of the field, outshooting the Bears by a 15-3 count in the first half. However, Brown goalkeeper Caroline Washburn kicked away eight shots to keep Fairfield off the scoreboad. Brown took advantage of a flurry 20 minutes into the half when Tacy Zysk converted a pass from Kelley Harrison on the team's third shot of the game, pushing the visitors in front by a 1-0 score.
Fairfield picked up where it left off the first half by attacking Brown's defense. Less than two minutes into the game, Fairfield finally broke through when Leo sent the ball toward goal from the left circle, which Molly Byrnes deflected past Washburn to tie the score at 1-1. Even after the game was tied, Fairfield continued to press up front and create opportunities.
Once again, Leo was in the right place when she controlled a loose ball deep inside the circle. She sent the ball back toward goal where Jill Piacquadio secured the ball and redirected it past Washburn to put Fairfield in front for the first time.
Fairfield goalkeeper Megan Ambrose, who entered the game at the start of the second half, made six saves in her 35 minutes of action to earn the win. Caitlin O'Donnell played the first half and made two saves. Washburn finished the game with 17 saves as Fairfield outshot Brown by a 29-11 count.
The Stags return to action on Saturday, September 26 when they travel to the University at Albany for the America East opener. Game time is slated for 2 pm.
