Field Hockey Schedule Includes Three In-State Opponents Plus America East Slate

2009 Fairfield University Field Hockey Schedule

Fairfield, Conn. - A 17-game schedule that includes contests against the University of Connecticut, Villanova University, Ball State University as well as a full slate of America East games highlight the 2009 Fairfield University field hockey schedule. The schedule was announced by Head Coach Jackie Kane, who enters her 15th season as the program's head coach.

The year begins with the Stags heading north for a renewal of their series against the University of Connecticut on August 30. Fairfield returns home for a six-game home stand over the next three weeks, which begins with a weekend series against Ball State University (September 4) and Villanova University (September 6).

The home stand continues when Sacred Heart University travels cross town for a September 11 match up on September 11. One day later, Hofstra University heads north to University Field for an afternoon game. The six-game run ends when Bryant College (September 16) and Drexel University (September 19) come to campus for non-conference games.

Fairfield takes to the road for three of the next four games, beginning with games against Columbia University (September 23) and the College of the Holy Cross (September 26). After hosting Brown University on the 29th, the Stags open the America East portion of their schedule when it heads to upstate New York for a match up against the University at Albany.

The conference schedule continues with a home game against Boston University on October 12, before Fairfield returns to non-conference play at Lehigh University on October 14. The home schedule comes to an end on October 17 as the University of Maine returns for an afternoon game. The Stags finish the campaign with road games against Yale University (October 18), University of New Hampshire (October 24), and the University of Vermont (October 31).

The America East tournament starts on November 7 for the top four teams in the regular-season standings with the regular-season champion hosting the two-day event.

The Stags will look to improve on its 4-14 overall record from 2008, which included a 1-4 mark in America East play. Seven starters will return for 2009, led by seniors Molly Byrnes (Greenwich, Conn.) and Carly McCullough (Queensbury, N.Y.). Byrnes led all Fairfield scorers with seven goals last season, while McCullough enjoyed her best offensive season with three goals and one assist for seven points. Sophomore Marit Westenberg (Netherlands) was the team's top scorer as a rookie, tallying six goals and three assists for 15 points.
