Field Hockey Surrenders Four Straight Goals In 4-1 Setback To Sacred Heart

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University field hockey team jumped out to a 1-0 lead during the first half, but saw that lead disappear by yielding four straight goals in a 4-1 decision against Sacred Heart University.

Despite a heavy rain, the Stags dominated the first half by outshooting the Pioneers by a 14-3 count. One of those 14 shots found the back of the cage when Marit Westenberg tipped in a rebound off Jill Piacquadio's initial shot. She tallied her third goal of the season at the 26:28 mark of the first half.

Sacred Heart battled back tot ie the game just five minutes later when Caris Eye scored the first of her two goals, accepting a pass from Amy Hedricks and sending it past Fairfield goalkeeper Jennifer Utz.

The Pioneers put the game out of reach when they scored three goals just three minutes apart, the first coming when Chelsea Carlson sent a cross through the crease which Kelsey Zeyher tipped into the goal. Carlson pushed the lead to 3-1 when she converted a breakaway opportunity with 24 mintues remaining in the game. Eye closed the scoring when she tipped in a rebounded shot.

Sacred Heart goalkeeper Whitney Mills made 10 saves in the game, while Utz finished contest wtih six saves.

Fairfield returns to action on Sunday when it travels to Hofstra University.
