
Three Second Half Goals Sink Field Hockey Against New Hampshire

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- After taking a 2-1 lead early in the second half, the Fairfield University field hockey team yielded three straight goals to drop a 4-2 decision to the University of New Hampshire in an America East game.
The Wildcats took a 1-0 lead in the first half when Meg Shea converted a pass from Whitney Frates just eight minutes into the game. The Stags struck back to tie the game when Carly McCullough scored off a penalty corner. Melanie Leo started the play and sent the ball to the top of the circle where Emily Janis took control. She sent the ball to the left circle where McCullough unleashed a shot that caught the near corner.
Marit Westenberg gave Fairfield its first lead of the day when Janis sent a ball from the center of the field to the left circle. Westenberg ran the ball down and flicked the ball past New Hampshire goalkeeper Jenna Lehman. The advantage lasted just 90 seconds because Leah Boody tallied the tying goal off a pass from Sarah Craigue.
The Wildcats took the lead for good when Brittany Jacobs tallied a goal off a penalty corner after Leah Boody started the play by sending a pass to Kendall Deck. Deck dished off the ball to Jacobs who deflected the shot high into the upper corner for a 3-2 lead.
Kate Collins Smyth finished off the scoring with a goal at 59:04, accepting a pass from Sarah Craigue and pushing a shot past Fairfield goalkeeper Jennifer Utz.
Utz finished the game with six saves, while Lehman tallied three stops for New Hampshire.
Fairfield finishes the home portion of its schedule on Sunday, hosting Yale University in a non-conference game. The team will honor its five senior players prior to the game with the ceremony starting approximately 2:45 pm.
