Late Goal Sinks Field Hockey In 2-1 Decision Against Lock Haven
Sep 27, 2008
FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- A late goal ended the Fairfield University field hockey team's hopes of picking up a win on Saturday, as Lock Haven University scored with less than two minutes remaining to post a 2-1 win over the Stags at University Field.
The first half belonged to the visiting team as Lock Haven dominated the opening 35 minutes of play. The Eagles outshot the Stags by a 13-1 count, but strong play by goalkeeper Megan Ambrose kept Fairfield in the game. The freshman, who started her first game as a Stag, made six saves in the opening half.
After intermission, Fairfield picked up its pace and began to apply more pressure to the Eagles defense. While the team was outshot in the second half, the difference was only 6-5 in the final 35 minutes.
The Stags tied the game just four minutes into the second half, the start of which was a penalty corner. Amy Hosking served the ball to the top of the circle, where Katherine Donovan set the ball up for Carly McCullough. The junior lifted a shot over a diving goalkeeper, and clipped the left side of the net for a 1-1 score.
Both teams had opportunities in the closing 10 minutes, but none better than the Stags. A breakaway attempt for Marit Westenberg just missed as goalkeeper Erin Terreson turned away the attempt. The ball landed on the stick of Emily Janis, who lifted the ball toward goal. Terreson recovered enough to get a pad on the ball and deflect the shot away from the goal.
With 1:55 left in regulation, Lock Haven was awarded a penalty corner after an infraction to the far right circle. Alanna Lewis sent the ball directly to Casey Hughes, who unleashed a shot from the left side of the circle, beating Ambrose to the near side for a 2-1 lead.
Ambrose finished the game with eight saves, while Terreson tallied three saves for Lock Haven.
The Stags return to action on Sunday when they host Cornel University at University Field. Game time is slated for 1 pm.
