The Fairfield University field hockey team earned a 1-0 win over visiting Cornell University this afternoon on University Field.  The win improves the Stags record to 3-8, while the Big Red fall to 4-4.

Fairfield tallied the only goal of the game early in the second half on a penalty corner, with Emily Janis tallying the goal..  Amy Hosking started the play, sending the ball to the top of the circle where it was stopped by Katherine Donovan. It was the Stags lone penalty corner, and shot, of the second half.

The Fairfield defense was solid in front of keeper Megan Ambrose, who made three saves in posting the shutout.  The Stags withstood an 11 shot attack from Cornell, including a pair of penalty corners in the waning seconds of regulation. The Big Red started the game with offensive pressure as well, taking four shots in the opening minutes of the game, hitting the post with one of those shots.

Cornell outshot Fairfield for the game 11-7, including 7-1 in the second half.  Big Red keeper Ale Botte made six saves in the game.

Fairfield returns to action on Wednesday Oct. 1 at Brown, with game-time set for 4 p.m.
