Oct 1, 2008
PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Despite outshooting the opposition, the Fairfield University field hockey team came up short against Brown University on the road. The Bears posted a 2-1 victory over the Stags with the deciding goal coming in the second half.
Brown made the most of its four shots in the game, starting with its first attempt of the game. Abigail Taft secured a cross from outside the circle and beat Fairfield goalkeeper Megan Ambrose for a 1-0 lead. Fairfield managed to tie the game with under two minutes remaining in the half. Emily Janis started the scoring chance when she released a shot from the top of the circle. Molly Byrnes reached out and tipped the shot past Brown University goalkeeper Caroline Washburn for a 1-1 tie.
The Bears tallied the game winning goal with five minutes remaining in regulation as Taft controlled a ball in the center of the circle, spun around, and sent a shot past Ambrose to the near post for a 2-1 lead. The Stags had several opportunities to score in the second half, but Washburn was equal to the task.
Fairfield outshot Brown by an 18-4 count in the game, including an 11-2 margin in the second half.
The Stags return to action on Saturday when they open up their America East schedule with a home game against the University of Vermont. Game time is listed for 1 pm. The game will be web casted live on the B2 Network. For information, please visit the audio/video page on this website.
