Fairfield Celebrates NGWSD This Week
Feb 2, 2009
The Fairfield University Department of Athletics is celebrating the 23rd annual National Girl's and Women In Sports Day (NGWSD). To kick off the week, the Stags hosted the annual Girl Scout Day on Sunday, Feb. 1 and will celebrate the nationwide event at its Sunday, Feb. 8 home game versus Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foe Niagara University. The game will be played at Alumni Hall, on the University's campus, and is set to tip-off at 1 p.m.
"The past two decades have seen an explosion in the athletic opportunities for girl's and women of all ages," said Stags head coach Joe Frager. "To be able to recognize the pioneers of women's athletics, and to do so with a group of young women who have benefitted greatly from those efforts, is very special to me."
To commemorate the NGWSD celebration the first 250 girls and women who attend the game will receive a specially designed t-shirt. The MAAC received one of 17 grants awarded by the NCAA as part of the newly-designed NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Grant Program. The financial gains from the grant were distributed among 10 MAAC schools with the goal of fostering the growth of women's basketball, and the game specific t-shirts is one example of that effort.
The 9th annual Girl Scout Day welcomed over 130 Girl Scouts to Alumni Hall for the opportunity to meet the Stags female student-athletes. The Girl Scouts participated in clinics with 10 of the Stags varsity teams, providing them an opportunity to be introduced to new and different athletic opportunities.
"This event continues to be a lot of fun for all those involved," said Fairfield senior woman administrator Alison Sexton. "The relationship between our female student-athletes and the Girl Scouts is beneficial to both groups. For the Girl Scouts it is an opportunity to experience new sports, and for our players, it is a chance to teach the sport they love to a new generation of athlete."
In addition to the NGWSD event on February 8, the first 250 fans at the game will receive a pair of Stags basketball wristbands. Following the game, the women's basketball team will be available to sign autographs.
