Fairfield, CT: Fairfield University Men's Lacrosse attackman Troy Bamann (Victor, NY) was named Rookie of the Year and was a first team All-League selection is was announced by the Great Western Lacrosse League (GWLL) today. He is joined by classmate Tom Werney (Somers, NY), and sophomore Kris Klein (Shoreham, NY) who were both GWLL second team All-League selections . The three become the first Stags to receive GWLL post season honors.
Bamann, who was also named the NEILA Rookie of the Year, led the Stags in scoring in his rookie campaign with 23 goals, 26 assists for 49 total points. He averaged 1.53 goals per game, and 1.73 assists per game for 3.27 points per game. He also collected 29 ground balls, to average 1.93 per game. On April 17th, Bamann was named the Great Western Lacrosse League Player of the Week for his nine point effort against Butler and Ohio State.
Werney, who was also an NEILA All-New England honorable mention, finished third in team scoring with 34 points, but led the team with in goals with 24. He averaged a team-high 1.85 goals per game, and collected 30 ground balls for an average of 2.31 per game. Werney also led the team in shots with 99. On March 6th, Werney was named GWLL Player of the Week for his three goal, two assist effort against Cornell.
Klein played all 15 games and started 12 at defense for the Stags. He scored one goal, collected 28 ground balls and was a critical component to the Fairfield defensive core that allowed 9.67 goals against per game in 2001.
Fairfield, finished the regular season at 7-8 overall and an impressive 3-2 good for second place in their first GWLL season.
