Fairfield University senior lacrosse player Matt Petre added another accolade to his trophy case on Wednesday, being named a New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) Senior Scholar-Athlete. The Scholar Athlete Team acknowledges the graduating seniors from their respective schools, who have earned over a 3.0 grade point average and have excelled on the field.
Petre, a Finance major, led the Stags defense this season, starting all 13 games. He recorded a team-best 24 caused turnovers. He was also second on the team with 37 ground balls and tallied his first collegiate goal, to tie the game, at Hobart. In his four year career, Petre played in 47 games, with 39 starts.
The Stags went 7-6 on the year, the first winning season since 2005. Fairfield had its best-ever finish in ECAC Lacrosse League play, in third place, posting a 4-3 record.
