Matt Scanlon Taken By Denver In First Round Of MLL Supplemental Draft

Dec 10, 2008

Matt Scanlon (Bel Air, Md.), a 2008 graduate of Fairfield University and four-year letterwinner on the men's lacrosse team, was the eighth pick in the Major League Lacrosse (MLL) supplemental draft.  Scanlon was drafted by the Denver Outlaws with the ninth overall pick; however Chicago, which had the first selection, forfeited its first round pick.

"I am very happy for Matt and the opportunity that he has earned to play at the professional level," said Stags first-year head coach Andrew Copelan.  "I wish him the best of luck as he continues his playing career and am appreciative of his contributions to the Fairfield program."

Scanlon, a John Carroll High School graduate, was one of the top long-stick middies in the region over the course of his career.  As a senior he finished with 42 ground balls and 25 caused turnovers on his way to earning First Team All-ECAC and All-NEILA honors.  Over the course of his four-year career Scanlon picked up 107 ground balls.  In addition, in the last two seasons he contributed 47 caused turnovers, leading the team in each year.

Scanlon is the seventh Stag to be drafted by the MLL and the first since Greg Downing and Mike Bocklet went in the 2007 drafts.  Downing was the first player from the program to be taken in the MLL Collegiate Draft, being selected in the first round, while Bocklet was chosen in the fifth round of that year's Supplemental Draft.

The Fairfield men's lacrosse team will begins its fourth year as a member of the highly-touted ECAC Lacrosse League. The Stags open the season at home versus Delaware on Feb. 21.
