Men's Lacrosse Tabs Five As 2009 Team Captains

Fairfield University head men's lacrosse coach Andy Copelan announced that Chris Ajemian (Duxbury, Mass.), Jeff Cilente (Hillsborough, N.J.), Billy Honovich (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.), Matt Petre (Somers, N.Y.) and Gary Raniolo (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) have been selected as 2009 team captains.

"These five gentlemen have separated themselves as leaders during a critical time in this program's development," said Copelan.  "I have complete confidence in the team's selections and look forward to watching this team improve throughout the year."

Ajemian is a senior midfielder that graduated from Duxbury High School.  He finished the 2008 season second on the team in points, with 22.  He netted a team-leading 15 goals, including a game-winner, while also dishing out seven assists.

Cilente, a graduate of St. Joseph's Metuchen High School, is a goal keeper and returns for his fifth season.  He played 223 minutes over 10 games and made 29 saves with a 9.69 goals-against average.

Honovich, a senior defender who graduated from Walter Panas saw action in all 13 games, with 12 starts to his credit.  He was second on the team in 2008 with 13 caused turnovers, while also picking up 19 ground balls.

Petre a senior long pole, who graduated from Somers High School, saw action in all 13 games, making starts in 12 of the contests.  He finished his junior campaign third in both ground balls, 28, and caused turnovers, 12.

Raniolo is a senior midfielder that saw action in 10 games a year ago before a shoulder injury ended his campaign.  In the time he did see he picked up 16 ground balls and recorded eight caused turnovers.

Fairfield will be playing in the Cure for the Classic on Sunday, Oct. 12 at Thayer Academy in Braintree, Mass.  The Stags will play Providence at 11 a.m., Dartmouth at noon and Brown at 2 p.m.  Proceeds from the tournament will benefit the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, Mass.
