Nov 21, 2008
SAN JUAN, P.R. -- Warren Edney scored a team-high 13 points, including nine in the second half, as the Fairfield University men's basketball team dropped an 87-59 decision to Missouri in the second round of the O'Reilly's Auto Parts Puerto Rico Tipoff.
Fairfield attacked the basket right from the start which enabled it to take an early lead. Both teams combined for five layups on the game's first six baskets, which created a 6-6 tie at the first media timeout. Leo Lyons made a free throw out of the timeout to put Missouri in front at 7-6. Herbie Allen came down court on the team's next possession and made a three-point shot at 15:23 to put Fairfield in front at 9-7.
After DeMarre Carroll tied the game for the Tigers, Fairfield went on a 9-0 run to take its biggest lead of the game at 18-9. Anthony Johnson scored five of those points with a three-point play and a tip-in, while Greg Nero and Allen finished the run. The Staggs were still in front at 20-9 at the second media timeout.
Missouri slowly recovered from the run by chipping away to within two points at 24-22 at the 7:34 mark. Allen knocked down another three-point shot to move the lead to five points, hitting the basket at the 6:59 mark. The time was significant because it would be the last Fairfield basket of the first half.
From that point, Missouri would outscore Fairfield by an 18-2 margin, ending the half with a 40-29 lead. Edney would be the only Fairfield player to score in the final seven minutes, hitting a pair of free throws with 44 seconds remaining in the half.
The Stags started the second half with a jumper by Edney and a free throw by Han to pull within single digits at 40-32. Missouri answered that spurt with a 16-6 run that put the Tigers in front at 56-38, their biggest lead of the game. Missouri would lead by as many as 29 points at 81-52, before winning the game by an 87-59 count.
Allen and Nero reached double figures with 12 points each, while Anthony Johnson just missed the mark with nine points. DeMarre Carroll led all scorers with 15 points, while Matt Lawrence netted 14 points by hitting four of six three-point attempts. Leo Lyons tallied a double double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
