Jan 6, 2009
WEST POINT, N.Y. -- Greg Nero tallied a game-high 23 points and added nine rebounds to lead the Fairfield University men's basketball team to a 59-54 win over Army. Jonathan Han tallied his 1,000th career point and 500th career assist in the game as well.
The Stags led throughout the game despite suffering through a sluggish first half that saw the team make just seven field goals. Still, Fairfield was able to take a 27-21 lead at halftime behind a strong effort from Nero and Yorel Hawkins. Nero made all four of his field goal tries and tallied 11 points. Hawkins, who received his second straight start, tallied nine points by making all six free throw attempts and adding a three-point field goal.
Fairfield continued to control the game in the second half, holding an eight-point lead midway through the second half. Army's bench was called for a technical foul which triggered a 7-0 run for the Stags and gave them their biggest lead of the game at 15 points.
Army responded with a 14-2 run that cut the lead to three points late in the game, 54-51 with under three minutes remaining. Anthony Johnson made one of two free throws to push it to a two possession game. After getting a defensive stop, Han took over at the free throw line. The senior made four straight charity tosses to ice the game. The last of those four free throws was his 1,000th career point, the 36th Stag to reach the coveted plateau.
In the first half, Han picked up his second assist of the game when he fed a fast break dunk to Nero, giving him his 500th career assist. Han became the third Fairfield player to reach 1,000 points and 500 assists in a career, joining Joe DeSantis and A.J. Wynder.
The Stags return to action on Friday, January 9 when they complete their five-game road trip at Loyola College. Game time is slated for 7 pm.
