Jan 9, 2009
BALTIMORE, Md. - Yorel Hawkins tallied a double double with 10 points and a career-high 17 rebounds to lead the Fairfield University men's basketball team to a 63-60 win over Loyola College. The performance marked Hawkins' first career double as the Stags improved to 10-6 overall and 3-2 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play.
Fairfield led for a good part of the game, including a seven-point advantage at half time, 33-26. Anthony Johnson scored nine of those points, all in a row over a three-minute run. After his run, the Stags jumped out to an 11-5 lead and stayed in front for almost the entire half. Greg Nero also had a solid half with eight points, making all four of his free throws.
The Stags improved their lead in the first four minutes of the second half as Johnson tallied a pair of free throws to push the edge to double digits at 40-30. Loyola still trailed by 10 with 12:17 remaining at 46-36, but it was at that point the Greyhounds made a move.
The home team went on a 13-4 run over the four minutes to take its first lead since 16-15 with 10 minutes left in the first half. During that run, Brett Harvey made two three-point baskets while Isaac Reed added four points. Harvey followed with another three pointer to give the Greyhounds their biggest lead at 54-50.
The Stags answered with seven straight points, the last four coming from Nero that put the visitors back in front. Loyola used the free throw line to regain the lead as Jamal Barney and Harvey netted a pair of charity tosses each on consecutive possessions that put their team back in front at 58-57.
The two teams traded baskets by Jonathan Han and Tony Lewis before Fairfield finished the game with four straight free throws from Nero and Hawkins that made the final score 63-60.
Fairfield returns home for the first time since December 14 when it hosts Canisius College on Sunday, January 11 at the Arena at Harbor Yard. Game time is slated for 3:30 pm.
