
EDISON, N.J. - Fairfield University had 77 student-athletes named to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Academic Honor Roll for the 2007-08 academic year.
In total, 938 student-athletes in the conference were named to the Academic Honor Roll. To be eligible for the MAAC Academic Honor Roll, an athlete must hold a grade point average of 3.20 or higher on a 4.0 scale and be in his or her second year of athletic eligibility. The Honor Roll is open to both full-time and associate members of the MAAC with athletes represented in all 24 sports that the conference sponsors.
In addition to their success on the field, the Stags had a strong performance in the classroom during 2007-08. During the fall semester, 209 student-athletes had GPAs of 3.0 or higher, which included 10 Stags with perfect 4.0 GPAs. In addition, 80 of those student-athletes earned a spot on Fairfield's Dean's List. During the spring semester, 229 student-athletes posted GPAs of 3.0 or higher, including four with 4.0 GPAs, and 93 earning a spot on the Dean's List.
Several teams were recognized on a national scale of their academic efforts as field hockey, volleyball, and women's soccer received team honors from their respective coaching organizations.
Individually, numerous Stags were honored for their academic achievement. Women's soccer player Alex Caram, who graduated in May, was a Rhodes Scholar nominee and earned NSCAA/adidas Scholar All-American East Region third team honors. Her teammate, Ahna Johnson, earned a NSCAA/adidas Scholar All-American East Region honorable mention and was inducted into to a trio of honor societies including, Phi Beta Kappa, international honor society Beta Gamma Sigma, as well as Sigma Pi Sigma, the National Physics Honor Society.
Tennis players, Mark Kremheller, Balazs Szikla,
and Marisa Voloshin were named ITA
Scholar-Athletes while rowers Mary Crowley, Samantha
Rosen, and Karisten Strong earned a spot
on the College Rowing Association's National Scholar Athlete Team.
In addition, seven field hockey players, Sarah Borton,
Ashton DiDonato, Carly McCullough, Kristen McManus, Jill
Piacquadio, Brittany Smith, and Elizabeth
Thomas, were named to the National Field Hockey Coaches
Association National Academic Squad.
